Tasting Notes
This Rosé is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. It boasts a beautiful fuchsia color and has aromas of roasted strawberry, firm red plums, sugared violets, and lemon glaze. Farmer's market strawberry notes are balanced by graceful acidity and a lingering finish.
Vineyard Notes
2021 started by being a quite dry vintage. We had very little rainfall in the winter though we did have cold spring temperatures which gave us relatively normal timing for budbreak. Some mid-spring frosts occurred but we were lucky that our blocks were not affected. The most challenging part of the vintage was the very low crop set across almost all of our vineyards and blocks. The cold winter and spring led to a moderate and very nice summer with lots of foggy mornings. While the low yields were challenging in the vineyard, they led to amazingly concentrated wines with layers of depth.
Winemaker Notes
Breaking from our normal style of making pressed rosés, this one was made from a blend of saignée fractions from three of our Rhone wines: Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre. After we picked each of these lots for red wine, we saignéed (drained juice from the tank to increase the ratio of skins to remaining juice to concentrate the final red wine) a small percentage from each. This saignée fraction was a beautiful, light, crisp rosé juice. We fermented each lot separately and combined after fermentation. This wine did not go through malolactic fermentation and only saw neutral oak barrels, which preserved the bright and delicate fruit. After 4 months in barrel, we bottled.
Food Pairing Notes
This Rosé is perfect with steamed mussels and crusty French bread, or a nice beach with a bunch of friends.
